U.S. Decarbonization Accelerates, State Trends Differ

In 2023, U.S. energy consumption decreased by approximately 1% compared to 2022, while GDP increased by 2.9%; residential electricity demand dropped by 5%, commercial and industrial sectors by 3%; coal consumption fell by 17% (1.7 quadrillion BTUs); nuclear, solar, and biomass energy consumption rose by about 1% each; 11 states reduced fossil energy and increased non-fossil energy, while another 11 states increased fossil energy and decreased non-fossil energy, primarily due to nuclear power closures; LLNL updated flowcharts dating back to 2015 to align with new EIA methods.
