The US is probably just one bad election away from becoming an autocratic dictatorship. Russia and China are already police states with one-party rule. India seems to be leaning hard in that direction. We're looking at the possibility of an imminent future where all the world's major economies are authoritarian states.

Imagine explaining to someone from the 1940s that our last best hopes for heading off planet-wide fascism are Germany and Japan.
