And yes, governments can't ban Nostr, but they can ban individual relays and remove apps from app stores.

Not your relay, not your data.

Not your app store, not your app.
I think many new to Nostr need to understand this.

 Profundo
We need relays with just IP Addresses. They can take any domain name they want from you.
They can ban by IP as well
 As easily?

Is Tor the only solution?
Decentralization. The authorities are not the same everywhere, and in some places in Russia, they are willing to turn a blind eye to things that could land you in jail in Canada (and vice versa). The main thing is to exchange information in a timely manner. 😅
There's some interesting decentralised phone hardware alternatives.

Might have to take some solutions from SSB (Secure Scuttlebutt) which Nostr borrows a lot from already but focus on the P2P. It’ll negatively impact performance but it would help in this scenario and should totally be secondary
If they remove the app everyone who already had the app still has the app, right?
Yep. But people buying new phones will quickly degrade the amount of activity from those apps.
 Screen monitoring is also here/coming

Not your OS, not your app
The only real solution is to be your own ISP. Using wireless technology. On a nuclear-powered submarine. Named Red October. With Harry Potter's invisibility cloak.
True, they control most of the infrastructure. Be prepared.
Anyone developing new apps for #nostr should be making PWAs. This time where apps can still get in Appstores at all will be fleeting, it’s the easiest way for the State to restrict Nostr and they will play that card.

They’ll go after relays too no doubt but that will prove a more difficult game of whackamole
I agree in part. In Brazil, specifically, Android's market share is likely close to 85%. I feel that a PWA might be more burdensome than a native app in this case.. Sure, they can't ban you from the app stores, but then you'd need to install a VPN just to use it. Sharing Android apks, I think, would be easier.
I think zap.store will be easier to use than Obtainium or downloading APKs from github for this average user
So what is a way forward? How can we mitigate this? #asknostr genuinely curious and would love to join the cause.
Make sure you run a relay or have a full backup of your events written in Nostr.

Relay.tools ca help you make your own relays.

For the app, use Obtainium to download and install directly from source. In the future, Zap.store will be more available for folks to install Amethyst straight from nostr events.
Does my home relay need DNS A-type record registered and WAN-to-LAN port forwarding if I run it on a 24x7 enabled Linux node inside LAN?
 Good question #asknostr
Let's make this happen next week! nostr:nprofile1qqsyvrp9u6p0mfur9dfdru3d853tx9mdjuhkphxuxgfwmryja7zsvhqpzamhxue69uhhv6t5daezumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcscpyug

Fixing an issue, preparing docs, and it's ready
how will it work if vitor wants to upload both the fdroid and play variants of the app? is this ready yet?
how will it work if vitor wants to upload both the fdroid and play variants of the app? is this ready?
Not yet, he'll probably publish the fdroid version. Variants is high priority on my list
okay cool :) also soz for sending message twice!
Ultimately, the outbox model and enough people running their own small relays will eliminate this issue, especially if we can host relays accessible without the need for DNS or IP.
This is interesting. How can we achieve hosting relays without DNS or IP? #asknostr
Using holepunch/pear is one option. Another may be this: @note1skq6njq098cmune3mz35s9snxuftdz3yx35cqyrlux3nv7vpdzlsfygf0l
legend! added to my bookmark. the more I spend time on #nostr the more I learn new innovation! ty 👌🤓
Alguém produziu um video exemplificando algo? Bem que o akita poderia migrar pra cá e fazer aqueles tutoriais cabulosos
great idea! I would if I know much about it. I will leave it to the experts! 🤣🤓
And, of course, use devices that allow us to install whatever we want without having to rely on a single app store.

Zap.store on Android is incredible, and I can't wait to see app selection on there grow.
💯 agree. Reliance on one app store especially corporations is a demise to our freedom!
A way forward is learning to be curious which leads to asking better questions. Being on Nostr is quite the achievement so you’re making a way forward
Only when Nostr is everywhere does prohibition become meaningless.
I am a bit afraid to ask. So, what is a relay? 😬

It's been a long time since I've updated Amethyst in the app store because I can do it through GitHub
Governments are past that stage. They have understood that banning the tech is not possible.

They now just throw you in jail if you use that tech.
They just banned x in Brazil, so...
Read your article on relyas... make me realize that thats the next step I need to understan to get a better grip of Nostr. Thanks! Continus learning here, good balance between doeble and challenging.
What is the best way to run your own relay? Very new to this protocol so I apologize in advance for the ignorant question
If the app is already on my phone, I’m good… right?
It’s the first step though. You don’t have to use an app and people are working on distributing your content to multiple relays.
Used zapstore from the command line, yesterday. Pretty cool. Like a package manager.
Is there a Nostr client that we can download from F-droid?
 yes, Amethyst
There's a Nostr app that is making F-droid obsolete.

All apps, signed by the devs or trusted admins. With all the Nostr fun too (zaps, communities, replies, shares, curation, any content type on those apps ...)

 Banning is not the issue.
It's letting them connect and then targeting.
Fear is more effective that banning.
amazing the idea, but would be great if the community had some relays boilerplate to easy install
Start installing apps from zap.store or obtanium rather than Google store. Much more convenient than downloading APK from somewhere.

Use Amber to generate/store your secret key on your mobile device.

Login to Amethyst with Amber. Or use Primal, but only if it allows login with Amber (did not since a while ago.

Amber, Amethyst and Primal are available form zap.store.
Amber is also on F-Droid, not sure about the other apps.

Also not sure what's a nice and easy Nostr Relay to install on a computer or a Raspberry as I've not explored the options yet.
Never heard of either of them. Good #knowledge, rewarded with #sats.

I still stand by #Apple fans being screwed though.
And zap.store is everyone's, unruggable app store.

Why? Because it's based on nostr events for each app and release, cryptographically tied to actual packages/binaries.

So even if they make feijoada with nostr:nprofile1qqs8y6s7ycwvv36xwn5zsh3e2xemkyumaxnh85dv7jwus6xmscdpcygpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsz8thwden5te0dehhxarj9ekh2arfdeuhwctvd3jhgtnrdakj7qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxummnw3ezucnpdejz7qxvpy4 's head for having VPN apps, the app store will just keep running.

It's also open source and you can fork it (we'll make it easier though, and let you manage your relays)

Super early days, but freedom and UX will only go up from here.

 I fucking lovr Zap Store!
more like not your nsec, not your data
So we can run a relay at home and only connect to it? Just in case it happens here too, better to be ready.
That's the best way. You can at your home relay to your Outbox/Inbox section and everyone will get events from it.
The problem will be the privacy in this case.
And they can't really remove it from #linux repos or open #apk markets either.

#Apple users are pretty much screwed though!
