They don't behave as if they're forced to reform when faced with competition.  Rather, they convince, compel or coerce folks to remain bound to their services (even intellectually it seems)

As far as where all the money comes from to do those AND prevent competitors, well, it's taxes but also, they alone have a monopoly on printing money, enforced with threats of imprisonment & lots of munitions. so... 🤷‍♂️

Better to ignore all of it.  Don't eat government sponsored food or act based on government funded facts. 

 This works to a point. Gets more and more difficult as it drifts from common sense. People don't like being coerced, and they will walk from outright force if they can.

So 🤷‍♂️

And don't call a government funded ambulance.
