it's not hard to overwhelm air defenses if you commit enough resources to the attack

was this a wise use of those resources? no, it wasn't 

 Were they overwhelmed by a huge number of assets, or did they just think there was no attack coming? 

 Reports i heard said it was a large barrage, few out of tens went past the AA defenses.
