God allows us to experience the consequences of our actions.
You can dismiss God’s commandments when it comes to how we look at money, and then money is going to own you.
You can dismiss God’s commandments about how much weight you give to other people’s opinion of you, and that other person’s opinion is going to own you.
You can dismiss God’s commands for the right use of alcohol, food, sex. Ask any addict and those things will own you.
“At some point, I dismissed what I knew was the right thing, and I just gave myself over to this, and then it owned me.”

For these things God is merely an advisor, evidenced by the fact that not everyone suffers consequences for those behaviors.
The sad thing is that consequences seem to mostly happen on the other side (we believe), even though the infractions happened here (we know).
