Humans are created in the image of God- who is Holy Trinity: Father, Son, Spirit. 
It follows that our own self would be a reflection of that. 

Even secular thinkers have split the self into things like ego and ID for example. 

The important thing to remember is that you are free to make your own decisions- and also that the only authority who holds any true power over you is God, who loves you as a dear child.
