Nostr's usage and growth among active users of the protocol continues to grow, however overall active users are still fairly low. Clearly our core community loves Nostr and understands it's importance. We are all bullish. That said, we need a breakout moment or event if we want to continue to #grownostr outside of the Bitcoin community. We can to recruit streamers to try zap.stream to see it's potential to get paid for their content. We can recruit bloggers to use habla.news and highlighter.com to have their voices heard without censorship. I still feel we need a good Instagram and TikTok alternative to recruit from those audiences. https://i.nostr.build/7ESRnvJUtSx9bTYq.jpg https://i.nostr.build/Tx9DjkXwcwovgSXS.jpg https://i.nostr.build/bm3tqWGU6Mzm5pHA.jpg
Don’t trust verify activity @noufsmith
Travel and food bloggers. That brought a lot of non-crypto people to Steemit back in the day. Before they screwed up their mechanics.
This is a great idea. We just need to collectively attempt to recruit one demographic to start off.
Slightly off-topic, but the other day I as Googling something, and I kid you not, the top Google result was an old Steemit article. I literally got up from the desk and computer and shoved it out of my mind. I'd thought I'd stepped into an alternate reality. It freaked me out a little. hahahaha. I've never seen that happen in all these years. Not once.
It’s a constant struggle. On one hand I want to use nostr more, on the other hand I want to use all social media less and have less screen time. Best I can do is only use nostr when I allow myself screen time. Breakout will come once well known non bitcoiners start coming here to act as a catalyst. Then others will follow.
I get this. Glad to have you here with us when you're feeling the urge.
Small high quality nostr > bloated legacy social media impostr
While this may be true to some extent, it doesn't help with sustainably. We can't continue to pay for everything ourselves. We need new users with new liquidity.
I see your point but I find it a menace to copy legacy media’s (mental) models of monetization by scale. I strongly believe it doesn’t have to be this way. Not yet and if later, hopefully very differently. To #grownostr user base, to make it sustainable, and to make it resilient are all important but very different things. Sometimes they intersect but more often than not they contradict each other. As always: trade offs…
How easy would it be for a streamer to properly try zapstream if they came to nostr on zero sats? Has anyone written a guide aimed at this sort of user? (I believe you do get credit equivalent to 1hr of streaming for free).
This is part of the problem. We set people up for failure in this regard across a lot of clients, not just zap.stream. That said, I believe Zap.stream gives you an initial credit to allow streaming for free to get you started. I don't remember the amount of time span.
Oh I think nostr:nprofile1qqsxua0hju3e0j3jjhs0fjs0h3htnnreh6zm4lw4d0fhsgsv4rhwwnsprdmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68yurvv438xtnrdakj7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09uq3camnwvaz7tmwdaehgun9d3shjtnev4nksun09eekjar99ujwapd9 has a guide for streaming perhaps?
Have Fun Staying Censored
Most people will never get this until it happens to them or their loved ones.
Core community > 58K gang.
Agree here 💯
The one thing we need is more authoritarian countries and rules, like now in the UK. Same as with #bitcoin: people don’t want to learn until they NEED to
I get what you're saying, governments can advertise for us, but we don't want to wish that on people 🤣
True, but they will. Seeing it more and more recently
now are 5 months nostr:note1f25td2xxgxfu80xpgg47cmfg2zkn6v803kefj3htjss5nvamfmgs6s2u3q
As long as you keep posting Nostr's death dates, we'll have content. Please don't stop.
Does anyone have reach to the Mises Institute and or Libertarian Party? It would be important to have them understand how NOSTR is key on supporting Individual sovereignity and free speech. This should cascade well in global leaders that consider this important values.
That's a good idea. I hereby use my Nostr CMO power to grant this task to you. Work hard! 🤙🏻🫂💜
I have nostr:nprofile1qqsqpm26z4rzjcfxetefat9kzpsvq03pss96zgrqqehk339tg6j0lzqppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qyg8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnddakj7qg4waehxw309ahx7um5wghx77r5wghxgetk9ufyccyd following me 😄, but there's no purple ✔️ so I'm not sure who's really running that account 🤨
Onboarding for new users is still the challenge. Users are used to logins and pw with another one of their accounts working as a backup. Also, understanding the benefits and how to convert over from platform to protocol theory, the average user online doesn’t understand. If somehow it was made to feel the same and convert their current user experience that might make them feel safe. But npub and nsec can be scary for those not already involved in the crypto space.
I 100% agree here and it's something that I've been saying for a year now. Onboarding generally sucks with Nostr applications. It's a complete afterthought for most applications that we have. It's slowly getting better though. I am still hopeful that the community as a whole can tackle this hurdle before the year's end.
As a new #Nostr user, I didn't realize until I'd gone through the signup process and "spinning up a node" and all of that, something like two weeks later — that using crypto is absolutely **not** required to use Nostr. I had no idea! As a #new user, I would have been far more comfortable onboarding, knowing I could leave the whole crypto thing to the side and use Nostr to stay in touch when there's no other way of staying in touch with family or what have you. I could have had time to do more research to see which setup I may have preferred otherwise. I like to research when I have time and evidently, there are several choices to choose from.
What kind of node did you spin up? A Bitcoin and Lightning node? But yes, Nostr does not need Bitcoin. Though, the two have a beautiful relationship if you choose to partake.
“we need a breakout moment or event if we want to continue to #grownostr outside of the Bitcoin community.” Sounds like what Bitcoiners said about #Bitcoin like 10 years ago. The catalyst continues to be bad money. As long as the money continues to print and politicians continue to weapons their currency, Bitcoin thrives. And likewise, as long as the internet companies continue to censor and ban free speech, Nostr thrives. Gradually then suddenly
There's conventions, conferences, and trade shows for every under the sun. Some of them aren't very expensive to set up at. I'm not suggesting that you specifically become a trade show nomad but maybe some group would be willing to dedicate time to do a 'nostr tour' to various things where ideologies overlap. A budget for it might seem like a hurdle but a well planned itinerary & an inspired team could be enough to open up various opportunities. I don't know. I think about stuff like that a lot because a break out moment is probably going to look very different than most previous, being that nostr is so very different. That idea bounces around in my head a lot. This seemed like a good spot to set it free. 😅
I've been thinking about doing just this 😜 It's a great idea, IMO. Thanks for confirming.
Woo! I'm glad to hear that! 😁 It matches the ethos so well and in-person outreach is primo. If you ever need to bounce around about it, I'm down 😂🤣
I think we might need to lower our time preference. Look at the challenges facing Twitter right now…and they have advertising. Our alternative is buying bitcoin with the dollars being spent on NOSTR development. Growth isn’t the goal, quality is.
My two cents. To keep active people around, it's important to make sure their following lists don't get wiped out. Mine got nuked, and I stopped using Nostr for a month. I only came back because I love the idea of decentralized social media and enjoy following Nostr devs' progress.
Nostr.band shows a huge decline in daily active users though https://s3.poster.place/poster-media/b1dac34afb0475f1819ea84271456e4d115c0a707e1cd9d51f77ce360bc9f759.png
The infrastructure is still lacking in MANY respect, rushing to onboard people who aren't ready for it will leave them struggling through a subpar experience and more likely than not give up on Nostr. Good luck getting them to come back after this. Nostr is just like Bitcoin, people are going to flock to it in cycle but it's probably for the best that we don't have a "breakout moment" right now.
Nostr will never be complete, nor will it be ready until the needs and problems present themselves. Over the last 20 months I have not witnessed major issues being tackled until they're front and center. The motivation to not fail is strong. The motivation to not solve issues that aren't apparent are often put on the back burners too. I feel we need a catalyst.
What’s cool about nostr is that I stood up my own infrastructure for dev and testing. I don’t require anyone’s permission for what I am doing. My take is someone will come up with something really cool without asking for someone’s permission.
Absolutely this.
The UX problems with Nostr clients are front and center and very apparent in contrast with centralized solutions. We know that the current state of key management is unsustainable for larger audiences. There seems to be promising progress in that regard. I do agree that waves of adoption stimulate innovation but "recruiting" people to Nostr feels like "recruiting" people to Bitcoin. It's a pretty perilous endeavour.
I absolutely agree here and was just speaking to someone about this earlier in the week. The solution for now is to recommend Primal and Damus. They are simple, easy to use, and just work. They are the most stable. The issue with just doing that is that these two clients don't fully showcase the power of Nostr. They're mostly just kind 1 Twitter alternatives.
and primal is not a nostr client
Primal isn't a Nostr client? Well that's an odd thing to say when it clearly publishes to Nostr...
people have been recruiting others to bitcoin at great cost and for a long time, even michael saylor, while you did nothing and just enjoyed the growth of your network effect while shitting on the same people who were putting in the work congratulations
I was in the dragonsden fighting in the trenches at Bitcoin's most critical moment? Where were you? I have done my fair share of Bitcoin "recruiting". Most of the time it's a total waste of time. People will come to Bitcoin as they need it. Same for Nostr
Main thing I'm focusing on, and I think others should too, is zeroing in on any other communities we have a foothold in, to bring them onboard. nostr:nevent1qqstew680s43pn7jpn4wrhn6p65xqez45k4g8xg6fpupgq8czeh42ycpremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59upzqqqcklhr87e98ppk88rzu2f0a3cq56df8vywud6vt0dfw8ym89tyqvzqqqqqqy96jr2m nostr:nevent1qqsvtxuh0elntmhcgjp3mwqvaql0pmycmqfvw7evxcg6zkn0dljnlzgpremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59upzqqqcklhr87e98ppk88rzu2f0a3cq56df8vywud6vt0dfw8ym89tyqvzqqqqqqyfv29mm
