True. Double ratchets is the part of the UX people dislike the most with SIgnal, WhatsApp, etc... On Nostr, groups can be so much more than just Chat. As in, you can have a private group with your wife that also has your calendar, notes, pictures, etc... Not having these events accessible from multiple devices or seeing them disappear after X time is incredibly unattractive. Private relays offer a way for private groups to be as private/secret as the use case requires. They can be anywhere (cloud, self-hosted, in the device itself, Tor connection) and have any rules. And they can be transparently monetized.

WhatsApp is Meta. Signal is developed by an independent nonprofit. There are also Session and SimpleX for anonymous chat options. Matrix is also pretty solid for large, decentralized communities but it's not nearly as protected as those other options so I just use it as a private Discord/Slack alternative.

The safest bet is to go for Signal. It's highly audited and proven true by their warrant canary. it has post-quantum encryption and a baseline encryption standard that is, quite genuinely, THE gold standard of encrypted messaging. It encrypts almost all metadata and attempts to mitigate privacy on areas where it can't encrypt/remove metadata, such as their sealed sender feature (which makes it so any observers of the network can't know who a message was sent from, only where it's sent to). On top of that, it also has a great feature set. Most of the better messaging apps like Session or SimpleX might be good for anonymity, but they both lack many of the features people like in modern messaging apps. Signal has a lot of customization options and even has a Snapchat-like stories feature for people that care about that. So yeah, at the end of the day, Signal would be my recommendation for people fleeing Telegram. It's generally best as a one-to-one messenger for people in your contacts list but it can also be used for group chats. If you absolutely need large-scale communities like Telegram groups, you might also check out Matrix through the Element client, but it's not nearly as feature-rich and only the messages themselves are encrypted; all metadata remains unencrypted. Signal is the best balance of security and features.

No problem! I'd also recommend at least playing around with the others, just to see what they're like, as it doesn't hurt to have them in your privacy toolbox. SimpleX has a lot of great open groups you can join. Session used to, but there was a huge DDoS attack a few months back which basically took down a lot of the large communities and forced the more serious groups to host on new servers.

Signal does not have access to messages as they are end-to-end encrypted. Signal servers could access metadata (who's talking to who and when) but historically they have a good track record: https://signal.org/bigbrother

my point was that they both provide IP and phone number to LEO requests but from a trust model Telegram is worse because they can access the messages but Signal cant. of course WHAT is being shared may be less important than what they are capable of sharing.

It's a shame. I mean telegram never was the most private messenger, but it was alright, and beside that, it had a large user base and a lot of cool features. Also with its channels, was a good social media too. How can I replace it with simple x or session when others won't use them? It's a big loss.
