California sues oil giant Exxon over plastic recycling 'myth'

California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on September 23, 2024, alleging a decades-long campaign of deception regarding plastic recycling. The lawsuit claims ExxonMobil misled consumers into believing single-use plastics could be recycled, while in reality, only about five percent of US plastic waste is recycled. Bonta seeks to hold ExxonMobil accountable for plastic pollution clean-up costs, potentially amounting to billions. The company has produced around six million tons of plastic annually and has processed only 0.5 percent of that through its 'advanced recycling' methods.
