I might suggest having a spare npub you use and also letting them use it. So they sign into nostr as you, and the people they see posts from are the ones you've followed on that npub, etc.

If they're old enough to need their own npubs, they might also start wanting to get around any hand-filtered feeds 

 That's a good idea. Right now, they've setup their own little communities in discord.
