Expand base, avoid super rich tax: CII president

Sanjiv Puri, the chairman and managing director of ITC, has taken over as the new president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The CII is recommending several measures to the government, including creating more jobs, skilling, and generating political consensus on crucial reforms related to land, labor laws, and the farm and power sectors. Puri emphasized the need to widen the tax base and rejected higher levies on the super rich. The CII is also recommending three slabs for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the inclusion of real estate and petroleum in the tax system. Puri highlighted the importance of job creation, improving farm incomes, and creating a virtuous cycle of employment, consumption, and investment. He also stressed the need to focus on agriculture, human capital development, and social infrastructure.
