You know something has gone wrong when you’re willing to pay premium price for a tv that doesn’t have a bunch of pre-installed garbage that steals your data.
Truths! I couldn’t believe it nearly impossible to get just a plain old TV screen.
It's easier if you stop looking for a TV and instead get a display. I like NEC. They are designed to run in retail but they work great in place of a TV.
Interesting. How do you stream stuff to them? Do they have an OS?
I saw at least on display running Android. But I didn’t check all of them.
Running Android puts you back with the same problems. Software updates and data collection out of your control. I prefer a display with the only software being for basic display settings (color, brightness, etc). It's really just a massive computer monitor for retail displays. But it looks and functions just like a "dumb" TV.
I use a mini PC running Fedor. Specifically, this one https://m.primal.net/HeKL.jpg
No, they don't have an OS in the sense that smart TVs do. They just have the basic software any display has for controlling brightness, color, etc. It's just a good old fashioned dumb TV when you use it like I do. It's incredible how that's a lost concept now. A sign of aging I suspose. Unfortunately, remembering freedom and respect seems to be one of the signs of aging now. Even our TVs abuse us.
I am in the process of getting a new TV. What are you buying that has less data tracking?
For anyone curious, this is the display. I got an older model on Newegg at a huge discount. These things seem expensive, but they are built to be on for 16/7/365. They aren't made to be consumer TVs, but that's the price you have to pay for freedom now. But getting a model behind massively offset the price. I paid about $600 instead of about $2200 (I think is the usual price.) https://m.primal.net/HeKR.jpg
That's the concept, but these are a better experience and funny enough, it was cheaper than a Pi when I bought it. https://m.primal.net/HeKL.jpg
