Say what you want about fancy SimpleX, Signal or Matrix, nothing beats the simplicity and snappy workflow of XMPP. Change my mind.

I dont know what you mean by snappy workflow, but for my use case, it is definitely the fastest and most reliable of all those.
@ODELL has too much faith in Signal. Once you start linking devices/desktops you'll quickly learn messages are never deleted. Disappearing messages does not work if you have the setting enabled on one linked device and not the other.
Concur with the first point, not too sure about the second. Regardless, XMPP the standard. Who needs normies? Keep it niche.
