My @Start9 still has no VPN, so is unusable for real world personal use. My @umbrel home didn't like the migration from my RPi and refuses to install any additional apps or offer the V1 upgrade. My other RPi 8GB +2TB SSD Umbrel managed to download and install the @Blockstream liquid blockchain, but broke immediately after a reboot. I'm getting too old for this shit.....
@Start9 will publish a new release soon with a lots of new features including FOSS vpn it seems 👌 I was also a bit disappointed to not be able to migrate my rpi4 to a new Nipogi node I bought just for it, it's not possible yet because... It's not an Umbrel home 😅 I suppose they want to sell some Umbrel home before allowing it but it sucks a bit (and I'm running latest v1.1.0). I'm a bit dumb to have updated my rpi4 Umbrel to v1. I should have migrate to Start9 with the migration process from Umbrel node and update to the latest Start9 when it will be released 😅
I bought an Umbrel home after trying to install on a Lenovo NUC with 32GB RAM and a 2TB SSD, but Umbrel didn't like it, so I downgraded to an Umbrel home, which only has 16GB RAM and will struggle to do what I need it to. I ended up installing @Start9 on the Lenovo, which has been fine, but no VPN. Also, Start9 is not as good user experience. I'm not sure of its claims of being an OS and therefore more stable, we shall see.
Buy cheap, buy twice
Huh? I've bought 4! 2 expensive and the expensive ones are worse than the cheap Pi's.
Why not just put the start9 on Tor?
It runs on Tor, the Bitcoin Blockchain uses Tor to "whisper". I think what you're actually asking is "How practical is it to access services like NOSTR and Mobile wallets via Tor?" and the answer is it's possible, but a miserable experience. A private VPN is much faster and more stable. Even from desktop, using a Tor browser is a compromise and not a pleasant experience. So no, I wouldn't try to make a lightning payment IRL using a Tor connected wallet, nor would I use NOSTR over Tor by choice.
