 In fact, that was the explicit original purpose for chain link jewelry.  

Sure it looks nice but you could go to a merchant,  snap off a piece and because gold is so malleable,  you could rechainlink the chain and wear it again, then on the wrist and then get more. 

Amazing how things form and then evolve.
