 @55b3f2a1 this design I found and used uttilizes a split gate design that flexes a single part.  

In a traditional metal carabiner a spring is generaly used. 
 @7192c2c3 fun fact: I know climbers that witnessed a fatal fall, someone used a “used” carabiner found on the ground - it was damaged and broke. Apparently you are not supposed to do that.

Yeah you generally don’t even borrow one from your buddy or let your buddy use yours outside of an emergency.

You are responsible for your own gear. 
 @7192c2c3 apparently there was a discussion over who should keep the damaged carabiner “oh no, I have enough YOU keep it”😱. That must make someone feel awful. 
 @55b3f2a1 if I still climbed or rappelled or jumped… I might have broken that biner just so nobody tried to pick it up again. Or thrown it away.
