Just booted my garage server after 24 days of downtime. The old Super Micro takes SO LONG too boot, there is ALWAYS a moment when my heart sinks, and I am just positive I’ve lost a disk. And then, somehow, every time, five or ten minutes later everything is online, and working fine. How long will I get away with this 10+ year old server firing up? No idea. But thankful!
is it zfs pool import that takes the longes? my old 15 years old super micro do take the longes on zfs import... beside post bios...
I just listened to https://2.5admins.com/2-5-admins-205/, and they brought up a good point that I never thought of before, because I am more of a developer than IT person: when you first provision a server, plan and budget for it to be replaced in 5 years time. It may last 5 years past that, but you’ll be glad that you have the $ (or ₿?) to deal with it when the inevitable failure or irreversible end-of-life comes to pass.
old servers running everything including the firewall, are definitely dogs to reboot. my r310 takes about 10 minutes to settle down when rebooting. irritates the others in the house
