rip hashtag following… looks like its being abused by spammers. This was expected tbh. You can go to your profile and remove all hashtag follows until we have better tools to deal with this.
bummer. ‘Twas useful. spammers ruin good things
I suspect most spammers are government agencies trying to take down a system they can't control, or activists groups, or ... of course ... scammers trying to get money out of people.
Let's be real chief: scammers are 99% of spam bullshit everywhere, not just Nostr. 😂
How were they abusing it?
by spamming unmutable notes with lots of hashtags https://cdn.jb55.com/s/3b7b06ca5d870711.png

Blocked as spam 🐶🐾🫡
I have noticed this the last couple days. It’s sad users resort to spamming chaos to stir the pot and disturb this community. Thank you for the info and support to make this project a better place for all.
another option, show hashtags only from paid relays, spammers hate paying..
That would greatly limit notes from new people though, which I find the most interesting thing about hashtag follows, finding new people.
I was considering the idea of "funded hashtags" that can be paid, with for example 1-10 sats. This would make it costly to spam such funded hashtags. The funded hashtags would be a separate system vs regular hashtags. The funding amount could go to the relays that transmit the funded hashtags. This would not be a perfect system and spam would still happen, but it might be worth a thought.
Any idea who the spammers are? Im developing tools to identify them (antizaps) right now.
Tags need to be AI generated based on the actual content so it can’t be manipulated.
Nostr was never going to survive without solving the "bot hell" problem, which I honestly think proof of work could help solve. Nostr protocol should be exchanging user agents and it wouldn't be impossible to require proof of work appropriate for either mobile or desktop clients. Of course, the capability of a desktop client will be absurdly disproportionate to what mobile clients can do.
