In 1997 Diaspora by Greg Egan was published. It details how a neural network can be cultivated into a discrete consciousness, how it interacts with the digital and physical world, and how it navigates space via a hybrid coordinate system similar to #cyberspace. When the neural network achieves self awareness it is granted a private/public keypair that serves as its identity.
It's #SF, but SF can be very practical.
