Look, I get everyone wants to point out that it is possible to ignore assholes. I get it.
The problem is if a bunch of these sick fucks start lying about everything for 20 years and nobody bothers to check and everyone starts attacking you for effectively *no reason* to the point that they fly over jetplanes and helicopters to intimidate you about all the bullshit accusations and nobody is preprared to hear your side of the story because the lies were more entertaining, then you reach a point where *enough is enough*. 

 And some morons the call it "politics", but politics is not an excuse to completely fuck up someone's life for no reason without any explanation.
The people involved know *very*, *very* well that what they are doing are all kinds of wrong and that no excuse justifies their (abusive) actions. 

 Interesting: The Cato Institute was named after the Cato Letters which were written in the 18th Century using the pseudonym Cato for Cato the Younger’s opposition to Julius Cesar. Cato the Younger is the great grandson of Cato the Elder.
