What does this mean? This means that the people who follow influencers here are usually not reading anyone else's stuff. So everyone else crowds into their threads, in the hopes of scraping together some crumbs of attention. Which creates an articifial engagement bump and catapults the same people to the top of the trendlist over and over. And newbies only follow the people at the top of the trendlist. Wash, rinse, repeat. This is the most antisocial social media algo ever designed.
This algo results in the bifurcation between the biggest 10 npubs and the remainder, steadily growing over time. The responses used to be 3x, 6 months ago, now they're 10x.
We're literally helping them build a shrine to themselves. 😂
- Why is the retention rate so bad? - Maybe people aren't seeing the latest uptober58kgangstacksatsfuckthefed posts?? (What I imagine a nostr dev growth meeting is like)
🤣 I mean, from their point of view, why would you want to retain someone who is interested in seeing anything else? Fuck them, right?
The Social Bitcoin Funnel 🌊
Yeah, I was in it, for a while. Actually an uncomfortable, weirdly-lonely experience. I understand why so many of the larger accounts prefer to hide out most of the time on Simplex, Slack, Discord, or Telegram. Those are places where you can get cozy, within a community, and can really take the time to listen to each person and make some sort of emotional connection. Like, they create this funnel, and then they go hide from it. 😅
I need to stop looking at my notifications on primal. I'm just making things worse by responding to this trending stuff, and redirecting other people's attention to them. * That moment, where Stella realizes that she's just another mindless, simping NPC, to these VIPs. * https://media.tenor.com/rOqwWGNgfGAAAAAC/ignores-you-in-spanish-ignore.gif
We desperately need to get off of the main feed and create real communities, where we are easy to find and we can converse with people who might actually read what we write.
Yeah lol, I sometimes look at primal and the "trending" posts are there lol. They even show you people you've blocked. (They're apparently working on this tbf). I wonder what it would look like if you kept muting the large, boring accounts. Probably still not useful, but less annoying
The funniest thing about the boring posts at the top, is that the same npubs often have much less-boring posts, putting a lot of care and attention there, but nobody engages on those, cuz thinking is hard. 😅
