With Iran port deal, India to expand Central Asia trade, counter China ========== India has signed a 10-year contract to develop and operate the Iranian port of Chabahar, which could serve as a counter to a Chinese-controlled project in Pakistan. The deal, signed between India Ports Global Ltd. (IPGL) and the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, involves an investment of $120 million to equip the port and a credit window of $250 million to improve project-related infrastructure. The total contract value is $370 million. The deal replaces a 2016 pact that was being renewed annually. The move aims to expand India's trade with Central Asia and counter China's influence in the region. However, the success of the deal depends on whether the U.S. imposes sanctions on India for its engagement with Iran. #India #Iran #ChabaharPort #CentralAsia #China #Trade #Sanctions https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/With-Iran-port-deal-India-to-expand-Central-Asia-trade-counter-China
