#grownostr #biochar making a batch of biochar when it is actually cool enough to make sense. https://image.nostr.build/7ace3cd72e61e257fd5c21f5fd5227f94fa4f7e77ed5e635943a7ad4ac800aa9.jpg
I want to start doing this. What I keep finding online is only these large containers for doing it. I don't have space for a 55gl burn kiln or a kiln for burning at all. How should I go about doing it in your approach
Honestly, get a fire ring from tractor supply or any sealed fireplace. As long as the burn stays on the top you’re good to go. I’ve made plenty with a regular outdoor fireplace. When my kiln burns through this is what I’ll use. You can even make the same shape with soil. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tarter-farm-and-ranch-equipment-3-ft-fire-ring
I cut a 55 gallon barrel in half and just do an open burn rather than a kiln. I start with a small fire and keep adding material whenever the top of the burn gets ashy. It's easy to quench when it's done because the barrel I used had its bungs sealed, so both halves hold water. I think the cone shape would work better because I usually have some wood around the bottom edges that doesn't fully pyrolize. But it's easy enough to separate that and add it to the next burn.
Yup, as long as air isn’t being drafted to the wood, pretty much g2g.
The fumes burning off look and behave different than a campfire/fireplace combustion. Looks really cool. https://image.nostr.build/e9c21ad1889c508ae1d1a40ced619e39ea3f3a2cc4139bfd7e829e1d2793142f.jpg
