yeah just saw a web page where people running a PDS can submit a link, ans there seem to be around a 1000. I keep saying we are very late and if we don't move quickly Bluesky with its shitty DID plc, is still close enough to the ideal that it will be impossible to beat the network effect ... because it is good enough.
Agree bluesky DIDs are poor, but nostr has done pretty much nothing on structured data in the last 4 years. We could have been so far ahead, but every effort is kicked into the long grass.
I won't lie to you, I am structured data and semantic web skeptic. But John champions that stuff, so maybe we will put more effort there, most likely not thanks to me, I dread that stuff.
You are correct to be a skeptic. Takes a lot of learning to figure out the good bits. But better than strings with string meta data, stringified json, and magic numbers that are rationed out be a central authority. Never thought nostr would get this centralized.
There are a lot of (thousands?) of "hidden" ones. But Amethyst's push server is currently connecting to 3088 relays that our users have directly placed in inbox/outbox relays.
The difference is in Bluesky you only have one PDS at a time, so moving your account to a self hosted PDS is quite consequential. I guess it is safer to run your own relay in Nostr, but still pleasantly surprised.
Citrine has 8000 downloads. So, it is possible that there are more relays running on Phones, Start9s and Umbrels than on the public web.
