Sadly many "smart" people are indoctrinated while thinking they are "educated".  This leads them to blindly follow rather than to think for themselves.  Because they have degrees, they think they know and understand more and won't listen to people they think are beneath them even when those unindoctrinated people can teach them a thing or two.
