SimpleX I tried it and used it for a couple of weeks but it had a lot of lags and the groups were not doing well.

 The time I used SimpleX seemed like a good proposal. The issue like everything is the number of your contacts who are willing to use it.

I dish out incognito profiles to pretty much everyone, then change their display name to keep track. 

I have successfully backed up and restored to a new phone, also. That went so smoothly that it scared me. 

Calls sound good with a little manageable latency. 

iOS users have had some weird issues with notifications and uploading files, but nothing permanent or serious. 

I had an issue once with groups and messaged the team. They replied right back with some troubleshooting questions and guidance.
