US consumer sentiment falls slightly as outlook for inflation worsens

The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index fell to 77.9 this month, down from March's figure of 79.4. Americans' outlook on the economy remains largely unchanged this year. The decline in sentiment may be due to an increase in gas prices, which have risen about 7% in the past month. Consumers expect inflation to be 3.1% a year from now, exceeding the Federal Reserve's 2% target but still below the current level of 3.5%.
