You're not making sense. Metadata is a category of data, but you seem to be calling it "not data" and suggesting the difference is like, whole different etymological roots or something (incorrect) 

 There is. Metadata is information about a set of data. So no, they are not the same. Hence one is called METAdata and the other data.
