Saudi Arabia's first Red Sea Fashion Week kicked off with a sunset show on Thursday. The event showcased Saudi fashion and aimed to promote the nascent tourism sector in the country. The collection featured two dozen 'resort wear' dresses by Saudi designer Tima Abid, highlighting flowing white and beige fabrics. The second show focused on women's swimwear, a progressive move in a conservative Muslim country. The event took place at the St Regis Red Sea Resort on Ummahat Alshaikh island, part of the Red Sea Global project. Saudi Arabia has been trying to dispel the notion that it is a desert and has been promoting its tourism industry since 2019. The country's fashion and tourism investments continue despite criticism of its human rights record and the ongoing war in Gaza.
