Why would the #bitcoin creator want to be anonymous?

He didn't do anything illegal 🤔

#asknostr
Unless the guy cashes out his #bitcoin, he doesn't even have to worry about taxes

He, she or they knew that the current system is rotten to the core. Any person being a real threat to the current system will be taken out, be it friendly or deadly.

Better to stay anonymous after kicking the hornets nest.

Too bad people are searching for the identity.
So, mostly fear of the government
I don’t think it’s specifically the government. Might be some other forces who don’t want to lose control. Governments are just puppet shows 😉
One factor is that he would have a powerful central position and could be pressured to make or endorse changes.

The whole idea is to have no central trusted parties. Therefore a central known founder is a problem.
Doesn’t stop government from suiciding them
Who decides what is legal / illegal? Perfect money must limit centralised weakness as much as possible.
My first reaction to your question was - “how is that any of your concern? Satoshi obviously wants anonymity and that’s all that matters.” You talk of him not having done anything illegal, so instead I invite you to read the transcript of Julian Assange’s testimony to PACE last week. In it you will find a first hand account of how the US and UK governments trampled over laws designed to protect journalists and whistleblowers (including the United States Constitution, no less) to pursue a vendetta against a journalist who showed them for the murderers and thieves they are.

The state does not like its power to be challenged. Satoshi knew this and kept his identity secret for this reason. In fact you may recall him practically begging Assange in 2010 not to accept #bitcoin donations, given the heat it would bring down on the network which was at that point still in its infancy.

He chose wisely and we should respect that.
