On the one hand, I plan to welcome/follow all new #nostriches, in order to #grownostr. On the other hand all y’all veteran #nostriches are teaching me who is, and is not a scammer (links containing tracking tokens, not verified, purple-checked npubs). I love to learn, and be a better #nostrich for the good of the community, and I welcome correction. In this spirit, I will NOT welcome/follow the new npubs without verified purple checks. If any #nostr user can counter with why I should continue to welcome (and I always followed these randos, too…), please give me your best argument.
It's easier to unfollow than it is for them to setup a purple check
I’ve been here a long time and have no idea what a purple check means or how to get one. Can you explain?
Maya seems to be a verified npub, referring to the magenta check.
best argument: I'm too poor for some of this sh*t
The ironic thing is some nip05 providers (*koff* IRIS.TO *koff*) are overrun with scammers and spambots, so one still has to carefully curate their WoT on here.
I dropped using nip05 cause fuck a check
It's not about having a checkmark. I think clients should remove the checkmark. To me, it's about verifying that this is the correct profile and to easily be searched for and found. I'm derekross@nostrplebs.com and none of the fake accounts out there with my name and profile pic can ever spoof that.
Yeah except that when I changed nip05 providers, relays or clients it just throws errors
I'm not sure what you mean. You can change relays and clients all of the time and not get errors. People do this daily. And of course if you change domain you need to update your profile to point to the new one. They're not supposed to be like badges that you change though. Otherwise how would I know it's you if it's changed often?
I had an early nip five when I first tried damus back in the day and had hella relays. Then I think I changed it to Q&A's nip5 offering once I understood my set up was wack. Then after that nip5 only showed errors in amethyst, I tried using sovbit but it showed errors ( red exclamation ) too so I said fuck it whats the point of something that never works. Maybe now that I have my relays and client settled I can try again. I have no idea what relay keeps that info.
Oh I understand. It's possible those providers do not have their Nostr addresses configured properly. Many do not. Many don't allow CORS headers. If you do not, it will show as invalid on many clients, including Amethyst.
Nip05 has no future use case IMO lol 😂
Give more trust to purple checks that own the whole domain & non-purple checks.
Give less trust to purple checks printed by a "provider" (alby etc)
