Oddbean new post about | logout
They want people to selfhost now. Using meet.jit.si now requires you to login with third parties google, microsoft, or facebook. Another useless feature pushed to update & now you will have this wasting space on your harddrive because real people will never use the login by third party option.

To note you don't need to delete the app you just need to connect to another instance. Why they did this well they didn't want to write this in their blog post because it would be embarassing for Jitsi to admit but if you scour the forums & read all the threads you can put together the reason from all the post.

To save people time searching & reading I will explain a summary of all the comments. So Jitsi did this because they found out (extremely late) that many people using Jitsi was using it to get kids to strip online or screenshare cp videos playing. When people would report or go to the 8x8 for support in discord or other chat msg groups they wouldn't get to it untill hours later.

The person always ended up left unheard & the abusers had their fun already. So it was exposed that even though they claim to take reports seripusly there is 0 moderation almost. So this change was done in fear that they would face legal action because we live in a world where you can claim no liability, arbitration da da da.

But if people post all over your services are used for cp rings & they do nothing about it well they go to their lawyers. Their lawyers advised this so they could avoid any legal reprocussions. Also this ensures them that they don't have to do anything because when you use third party logins your being moderated by Microsoft, Google, & Meta.

So as much as jitsi writes all over they are for your privacy & yadayadayada just remember they are for their own ass first. Also a non-profit that writes a vague blog article as that without being transparent at all as to why & condescends it's userbase is not for the people. (read forums if you don't believe the devs told off their users)
