I have a different take on this: It's not about literally killing characters. 

It's about taking a good look at parts of your writing that you love and want to happen. Those might not be in the best interest of the story. 

This is why I sent North's love interest away after a third of the book. That was a darling I had to kill. It made the story better.

 @2433bcdf Yeah, when I looked this up (as a refresher) this morning, I saw that it doesn't have to mean characters. It could be your beloved subplot that adds nothing, or even a paragraph you love that doesn't fit.
