just because a bad hot take was written down 1500 ago doesn't mean it's anything more than that. remember this
Yes of course all of Christianity got it wrong until Luther. 🙃
Things got off-track and Luther was a correction.
I don't even hate Luther. If anything, I like him more than I should for a man of my religious leaning. My point is people leaning into Sola Scriptura twice over, as if it's not enough to trust only the scripture hit you must actively reject anything (written before Luther) that serves as a supportive buttress to your faith. Foolish.
Mate, what's your understanding of what Sola Scriptura is?
Sola scriptura means trusting the Church fathers (Martin Luther and Henry VIII).
 Turning point: Tudors
"By Scripture alone", which is fine until it's applied twice over as I mentioned. If any of the church fathers are speaking blasphemous stuff that doesn't jive with the Bible, cast it into the fire. Instead what I see with my own two eyes is people saying
>WHERE IS [X RELIGIOUS PRACTICE THAT YOU DON'T CONSIDER ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR SALVATION BUT IMPORTANT FOR ONE OF MANY OTHER REASONS] FOUND IN THE BIBLE? NOT THERE, HUH? HERETIC!
I see this daily on fedi. I saw it all the time when I was young, and it was one of the many things that made me leave the church for a while.
 >If any of the church fathers are speaking blasphemous stuff that doesn't jive with the Bible, cast it into the fire

a big example that I have probably said 6 gorillion times is jerome of stridon, I don't think it says in the Bible that you should pressure young impressionable women into starving themselves to death.
He helped a 19 year old socialite widow live out the rest of her life as an ascetic Christian rather than partying until death followed by eternity in hell. It's like an extremely hardcore interpretation of Matthew 18:8
I know but he murdered the woman and mocked all who pointed out the evil of this deed, he never repented, there's a good chance he's burning in hell,
 >If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into [b]hell fire.
He didn't take 💩 from the Godless degenerates around him who were sad that their equivalent of a Paris Hilton died too early as a pious woman instead of partying at ye olde patrician playboy mansion.
Just call them goofy goobers, you don't even have to acknowledge that kind of autism as Sola Scriptura.
It's not like there were never disagreements within Christendom before Luther.
