Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital Starts Foetal Surgery Department

Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital has partnered with Poland’s Medical University of Silesia to inaugurate a foetal surgery department. The collaboration aims to repair birth defects and foetal conditions before birth, with a focus on conditions like spina bifida, large neck masses, lower urinary tract obstructions, and certain tumours. Dr. Santosh Karmarkar, a senior consultant and paediatric surgeon at Lilavati Hospital, highlighted the significance of foetal surgery in prenatal healthcare to prevent long-term complications for unborn infants. He also mentioned that lack of awareness and financial constraints prevent approximately 70% of patients from receiving the required treatment. A conference was held to raise awareness about the importance of foetal surgery, bringing together experts, practitioners, and researchers from around the world.
