I agree, I think clients should try to make sure that there are at least a few relays they all recommend to avoid network islands, and users should be encouraged to diversify. 

What you gain from your private relay is the guarantee that your followers can always see your posts irrespective of what their other relays do. I think this is healthy, as it takes away any power other relays may have to censor you.
