Besides the bizarre ethics, I can't see longtermists as even remotely rational when they downplay the risks of climate change, as to our best knowledge the distribution of outcomes in many climate change paths (including the one we are on now) contains even the collapse of civilisation with a non-trivial probability.

The interest of rich people on longtermism reminds me of:
- attributing monarchy to an alleged divine will;
- authoritarian bureaucracies crushing the people in the name of the greater good while firmly attaching themselves to power
