 If you dare to defy the laws imposed by the government—no matter how absurd or unjust they may be—you’ll quickly find that those around you, who are abiding by those very laws, will become extremely angry. Why? Because they’ve invested heavily in ensuring they don’t cross the line that law enforcement has drawn. In a sense, the government sets the rules of the social game between strangers, and when you break those rules, you’re seen as a threat to the fragile peace and harmony that they believe those laws maintain. It's a stark reminder of just how deeply embedded these social contracts have become in our collective psyche.
