I think it was always shallow, exploring the trope merely revealed how shallow it was. A group of strangers could never be a replacement for a real family, love and acceptance as an adult won't undo a terrible childhood. But I agree with you that the "found family" was probably too close to a real family for their comfort, all they want to do is sink into their own little delusional world.
