This chapter considers metaphors, which are often used in law to convey abstract principles. It discusses the origins of metaphor, the political context of the metaphor's formulation, and the current uses of the metaphor by publishers. Its focuses on the metaphor “the answer to the machine is in the machine” and its relevance to rights information. It argues that the main problem with this metaphor is that it writes out of the equation why human behavior on the Internet is occurring, and falsely suggests that machines can solve human behavioral problems. Machines, like laws, are created and controlled by humans. Thus, the answer to human problems must be solved by humans.
