I think the egalitarian nature trends among just about any group that deals with oppression. Those not afforded rights typically find that unjust, and rightly so. In denying women the right to vote, you seek to rule them without allowing them any say in how they are ruled. You set yourself above them by virtue of something other than actual merit because you fear you have no other way to do so.
