Oddbean new post about login | logout It's gotten to be a bit much. Not sure where this came from, but I never noticed this strange cult-like behavior until just the past couple years. I think lockdown fucked everyone up.
Technology is always cult-like, going all the way back to metallurgy (and alchemy), shipbuilding, and masonry. We just have (should have) the good sense from historical frame of reference to not make our thing a cult. But I guess this is a human thing also, so very hard to break or escape - “cult” is the root of “culture” for a reason…
