 @3d89e131 if it's free *and proprietary* it's a trap. If it's #LibreSoftware (e.g. many Mastodon instances are 'free' to use, like this one and Mastodon.nz), it's often a labour of love, and (in my experience) is often legit, even if it seems too good to be true.
