@c3f6e3f1 previously it was shipped in an insane set of 747 freighter flights that stocked stores and individual orders, if I recall right. the insured value of those flights is nuts. billions of dollars.
@267a05cc Yes. We used to get notifications on shipment steps all the way from China for preorders, nowadays after a week, in one step: here's your order (presumably from a local storage area). So they must have shipped these ahead of time, or first week pre-orders still flown in?
@c3f6e3f1 @267a05cc I suspect they still fly them in last-minute, they just attach labels to them in the US instead of in China.

I wonder whether the Ukraine war impacted this any - I think they used to route them through Alaska, but if you can't fly over Russia then I don't know if that still make any sense distance/fuel-wise (so maybe moving to a different hub affected their logistics in other ways)?
@c3f6e3f1 well, they did mention in their unfunny eco skit that they now ship by ship vs. plane and reduced shipping emissions 95% or somesuch. I'd assumed that was non-launch day inventory but maybe you're on to something.
@c3f6e3f1 @267a05cc You used to be able to follow the actual airplane your phone was on (to a moderate degree of certainty) by matching UPS tracking and customs steps with FlightRadar 24 data. IIRC in the past my preordered phones would leave Shenzhen only about 20 hours before I had it in my hands though I have a very direct last mile(s) from Boston Logan Airport to the UPS hub in Watertown to Cambridge.
