The all-stock package rewards Musk for hitting milestones such as raising Tesla's market value, pretax income, and revenue. Musk's package is the largest award to a CEO in the U.S. and is far above what other CEOs have been granted. The median pay package for an S&P 500 CEO last year was $16.3 million, making Musk's earnings 275 times greater. The top earner in the AP's survey was Hock Tan, CEO of Broadcom Inc., with a package valued at about $162 million. Musk's potential haul of 304 million shares is worth almost $45 billion. Musk's annual pay would have been in the billions if his compensation package goes through the courts. The median annual pay of a non-CEO Tesla employee last year was $45,811.
