So if that is how it started. I do not know how long ago but I started to notice this about 2 decades ago.

But then something happened. Suddenly there was a rift between Russia and Europe. And this started about 15 years ago.

From Europe, Russia, China building a trade suddenly Russia was no good. There were plans on a new direct railroad from Sweden to China via Russia. Europe. Also India. 

Energy, resources, goods. It was win win for every party. But then no more.
