But, the current news is getting very dark, depressing

The NBC news app for Android or iOS, when folks listen, there are some 1min to 3min AUDIO ads.
Most of the ads are kinda horrible, but...that's what we get when using this FREE service

NOTE, if you use this current version, you NEED to be in the USA or have your VPN set to a State in the USA.
Any State is ok
