Interesting part of this quote though, is they missed something. The central gov’t is attempting to destroy patriotism currently.
I’m not really an Orwell scholar, but I think what he meant by “primitive patriotism” is “loyalty to the Regime”. Instead of what we might traditionally label patriotism as a “common loyalty”, not to a government, land, or people, but to founding, Natural Law values. Central government is certainly attempting to destroy the latter.
