Ok- so if I had the same complaints about Damus or CornyChat, what should I do about it? Call those projects out for being subjectively "bad"? Who decides what you're implying, if not the people who hold the Bitcoin? I can fund any project I want as a user, as are you. I am free to create an organization like OpenSats, as are you. You're free to speak up about whatever you want, but if you aren't offering a solution, it just sounds like complaining. I'm just here to defend ONOSENDAI as a project because I like it, so I don't really know how to better address your concerns here. Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
You are missing the point. Corny Chat was developed and had active daily users before receiving a grant. Damus had done substantial work and had users before getting a grant. This metaverse project didn’t have any real validation and was still at an idea / mvp stage without users. Let’s see if this crap is still here in year from now and if anyone is using it.
None of that means anything to people with ideas. Are you saying none of my ideas are worthy of funding until I have already invested the time and money to get them off the ground? That doesn't even make sense. Every project has a different scope and a different team behind it. Clearly ONOSENDAI was validated by the OS board enough to get funding, and I'm grateful for that. Is it some conspiracy or is it just a tool you haven't wrapped your brain around yet? You were talking about metaverse bs plenty in CornyChat, so why the hate for this one metaverse project? Do you see a marketplace for ostrich NFTs on ONOSENDAI? Do you see ethereum support? Do you see Solana or DEX integrations? No you just see a metaverse that links to Nostr. Why is that bad in your eyes? Or, unworthy of funding by OS?
Hi nostr:nprofile1qqs9phjf9nl9guj9phc6q9m0makezh5hedwelrf7enhh6f0lp2y8rhspz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3samnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwwdhx7un59eek7cmfv9kqzxrhwden5te0f4hk7mjzda5jumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6e4ejv6. I'm sorry to hear you don't like my project. As far as having skin in the game, perhaps you missed the part of my post where I mention that I went from being a full time employee (at a job I'd had for 16 years) to part time so that I could work on nostr. Reducing my benefits and income felt like skin in the game for me. OpenSats exists to give people opportunities like this. Now I am full time nostr and working for a nostr company. No grants. My case is fairly ideal in that in one year OpenSats helped me go from hopeful nostr dev to full time nostr dev. I am very grateful for that opportunity. I hope others have similar successes. If OpenSats can get people to move from fiat world into full-time nostr dev and not depending on grants, that's a win right? Additionally it may bring you peace of mind that my grant was probably one of the smallest grants OpenSats has awarded in terms of money. I believe my work on ONOSENDAI has yielded some benefits to nostr at large. Here are some points that you might appreciate: - I developed a generalized NIP-13 mining algorithm for web which other clients can use. This algo is more efficient than existing algorithms. - I developed the first Nostr client that transports 3D data over nostr. This could be used in a host of applications not limited to tweet transport. - I developed a coordinate system that can serve as a superset of geospatial positioning systems, increasing integration between nostr and real world locations. As you can see from the community response to my announcement, people seem pretty excited about a permissionless metaverse where actions are consequential. No such thing exists outside of Nostr. I don't know what lies ahead, but if any metaverse matters in the future I want it to be one where proof of work matters more than privilege or authority. At the very least I think that ONOSENDAI stands as a testament to exploring possibilities with nostr and I hope it inspires others to be wildly creative and push the boundaries of this protocol that I love so much. In my announcement I mentioned I launched the straylight.cafe ditto community. In my free time I am committed to nurturing the new cyberspace community to grow and develop it. Even though my grant is over I want to see cyberspace thrive. You don't have to change your mind. I just thought you might appreciate some perspective. PV
Hey Arkinox, I appreciate your response here. My point is that even though you sacrificed hours at your job you didn’t actually commit a meaningful amount of hours to your project until you received the grant. Many developers in the space have full time jobs and commit resources (time and money) prior to receiving grants if any. Most grant recipients already have a project in the production stage where your project was still in the idea / prototyping stage. It’s no secret that I’m against the metaverse. But maybe I’m wrong. Can you tell me what the opportunity is here? What’s the best possible outcome for your project? How does Bitcoin and Nostr benefit? To be frank it seems that your project falls short of the opensats mission statement - “Help us to provide sustainable funding for free and open-source contributors working on freedom tech and projects that help bitcoin flourish.” The metaverse is literally the matrix, it’s “the anti-bitcoin”. The opposite of touch grass. Not to mention 10s of billions of dollars have been spent on trying to build these metaverses in which all of them failed. I get the feeling that a lot of Nostr devs think they deserve to get paid just because they put in work. And Opensats is over here giving out participation trophies to their close buddies even if the project is out of scope. How many other opensats projects were funded solely on an idea/ MVP?
Weird to attack someone's project before asking real questions You know nobody forced anyone to volunteer development efforts to Nostr? I could open a business that caters to 1 million Bitcoiners per year and OpenSats owes me nothing. There's also nothing "anti-Bitcoin" about metaverses. You're projecting hard with your own dissolutions. The two things can be totally separate and the underlying concept is sovereignty. Just like Nostr. You don't have to use Bitcoin here and you can use Monero or other shitcoins if you build the bridge. You want ONOSENDAI to be a fun MMORPG that you enjoy with your Nostr friends. It can totally support that endeavor but it's like you expect the framework to be the product. This underlying tech can make all sorts of unique applications come to fruition. No one owes you a product, and arkinox is not building a short-term idea. You can literally decide what a metaverse means to you. You can build on it. The fact that you can't comprehend the value in it is your burden to bear- no one else's. Imagine me hounding Vic to explain why voice chats are important for Bitcoin. That's how you sound. If you want to get philosophical, name something that ISN'T good for Bitcoin. Then tell us again why you're mad that someone else received some Satoshis.
Hi Puzzles. Here's a quick timeline of my work. - I had the idea for ONOSENDAI in January 2023. - I started working on it in February 2023 - I launched the first version in March 2023. In this iteration it was a 3D visualizer for nostr events, but I knew there was more potential, and I kept developing it. - between March and May I developed the blueprint for the cyberspace protocol. On June 1 I submitted my grant application. - In June 2023 ONOSENDAI won 1st place in the Yakihonne hackathon I competed in https://m.primal.net/LJAL.jpg - I was awarded the grant in September and it began October. - I spent October 2023 to October 2024 building what I proposed would originally take 2 years So there is some history here. People already knew about it and thought it had potential. It wasn't only an idea and I had been working on it outside of my full time job for the majority of 2023. I'm glad to hear that you are against the metaverse because the metaverse, as imagined by multinational corporations and fiat billionaires, is a just a tool to capture humanity in the Matrix to monetize every action, every thought, every interaction, and our very existence. As you mentioned, Meta has spent billions trying to build a metaverse and nobody really uses it — thankfully the matrix is still opt-in. However, this is not what the metaverse is meant to be as prescribed by those who invented and built the concept. Just like the matrix or any video game, every metaverse you've ever heard of (except cyberspace) is centrally controlled and privileged. The cyberspace protocol is the implementation of the bottom-up vision for a metaverse laid out in science fiction from the 80s. The literature describes a metaverse where: - nobody's access can be limited (permissionless) - it is accessible everywhere (omnipresent) - actions taken in the metaverse are consequential - competing actions can be settled trustlessly The key insight of the cyberspace protocol I developed is that in order to be permissionless, consequential, and trustless, POW must be the central mechanism that powers all interactions with cyberspace. POW allows cyberspace to function without any central authority or privileged access. This should sound familiar as you seem knowledgeable about bitcoin. So, what I am building is diametrically opposed to every other metaverse in existence. I have often said that cyberspace is meant to be a tool, not a replacement for reality. I am a reality maximalist. But as I explain in my talk from BitBlockBoom, there is a logical argument for recognizing certain digital systems and objects as being "real" -- most notably, bitcoin: https://youtu.be/4bAQjg9nOic Now, what will people do in cyberspace? How is it beneficial to humanity, nostr, or bitcoin? First, I can't pretend to know a complete answer to that question. Like the people who developed the protocols for the internet in the 1970s, they had no idea what was going to be possible or be built. Why did they keep building? I think it's because they knew that the fundamentals of what they were building were sound. They knew it had the potential to enable new possibilities. I feel the same way about cyberspace. I believe that the fundamentals of cyberspace are rightly ordered, and in time, people will find incredible ways to use it. One concrete benefit of cyberspace in my opinion is that half of cyberspace maps directly to reality. Everything you see around you has a coordinate in cyberspace. As you can see in this screenshot, all of Earth -- out to geosynchronous orbit -- is part of the coordinate system. https://m.primal.net/LIzY.png This enables a unified digital overlay for the whole planet that isn't controlled by anyone. Digital objects can have a physical location. Proof of work is the only way to interact with this coordinate system. Phones and AR devices could read and write from this overlay to bring all kinds of helpful data into physical space. It can be used by machines and humans alike. Adding contextual data to our physical world is a superpower in my opinion. I know there is negative sentiment about AR out there. We all hate the Apple Vision because it's Orwellian; Apple wants to gatekeep what people can do and see, and that's extra disgusting in an augmented reality context. It's not the augmented reality itself that repulses us; it's the fact that by putting on that particular augmented reality device, you are subjugating yourself to only see what Apple allows. It's absolutely chilling. With cyberspace, just as with nostr, the user is in control, and it's completely open. Any hardware maker can make any device (phones, tablets, IOT, glasses, etc.) and plug into an open protocol to provide AR experiences and contextual data anywhere on the planet or in outer space. Just as nostr breaks Facebook into a million nostr clients, if nostr serves as the substrate for augmented reality, then it will likewise break hardware developers into a million small enterprises who must actually compete to win. Nostr is the heart and soul of cyberspace. Your nostr identity is manifested as an avatar that can travel through cyberspace. Every interaction with cyberspace in a nostr event. Your nostr identity can publish information and objects and structures (represented by nostr events) that belong to real places on the planet using proof of work. No company could build a metaverse like this, because building something so radically open is not possible in fiat world. So companies like Apple try (and fail) to build walled gardens hoping that the whole of humankind will pay money to be trapped inside. I think that augmented reality not controlled by megacorporations, running on a permissionless network, and governed by proof of work is a net positive for humanity. No metaverse built by any corporation will be good for humans. But I think that this cyberspace has huge potential to be different. If we don't build the metaverse we want to see in the world, nobody is going to do it for us, and the Matrix will be the only option. I'm building the future I want to see in the world, where a greater and more free integration between physical reality and digital reality helps people communicate and build in new ways. nostr:note1cdxe2eykrj64vaywqm97fvyfyfez9ve7t2hyyt3law7lsulmqv0qehtvmh
Much more happened behind the scenes before Will got the grand for Damus and it's not for me to reveal this here.
